We can use derived tables in this situation. We encountered derived tables in the previous chapter, when we wanted to join a table with the result of a union. We would like to consider SELECT MemberID, COUNT (*) AS CountEntries FROM Entry GROUP BY MemberID as a new table. We could create this as a separate view, but if we want to use it only in this context, we can use a derived table. We do this simply by adding a name for this virtual table after the parentheses. In Listing 8-34, I have called the derived table CountTable (for want of a better name). It appears in bold in the listing.

When SSH key-based authentication is used, you must make sure that, for all users who need to use this technology, the public key is available on the servers they want to log in to. When logging in, the user creates an authentication request that s signed with the user s private key. This authentication request is matched to the public key of the same user on the server where that user wants to be authenticated. If it matches, the user is allowed access; if it doesn t, user access is denied. Public/private key based authentication is enabled by default on Ubuntu Server, so it s only when no keys are present that the server prompts users for a password. The following steps provide a summary of what happens when a user tries to establish an SSH session with a server: 1. If public key authentication is enabled (the default), SSH checks the .ssh directory in the user s home directory to see if a private key is present. 2. If a private key is found, SSH creates a packet with some data in it (the salt), encrypts that packet with the private key, and sends it to the server. The public key is also sent with this packet.

Tip If you have more than one printer installed (maybe you have a printer attached to your PC but also print to a network printer), you can set one as a default, which will automatically be chosen whenever you choose to print. Click System Administration Printing. Your current default printer is indicated by a tick in a green circle. If you d like to make another printer your default, right-click its icon and select Set As Default.

When you print a document, the Document Print Status icon appears in the notification area (it looks like a printer). Single-click the icon to view the jobs waiting to be printed, if any. Right-clicking a job displays a context menu that lets you cancel, delete, hold, and release the job, and even move it to a different printer. When you print from applications, Ubuntu will display a unified printer interface, as you might be used to in Windows. You will find similarities when you print in Gedit, GIMP, and Firefox. The only exception is OpenOffice.org, which offers its own simplified print dialog box. Most applications that use the unified print dialog box will provide additional unique options related to that particular application. For example, the F-Spot photo manager offers settings useful for photographs, such as laying up multiple images on a single page, whereas Gedit offers functions related to basic text printing. Ensure that you select your printer in the list on the left of the print dialog box (on the General tab) in order to see all the available options.

3. The server now checks if a file with the name authorized_keys exists in the home directory of the user. If it doesn t, the user can t be authenticated with his keys. If the file does exist and the public key is an allowed key (and also is identical to the key that was previously stored on the server), the server uses this key to check the signature. 4. If the signature is verified, the user is granted access. If the signature can t be verified, the server prompts the user for a password instead. All this sounds pretty complicated, but it really isn t. Everything happens transparently, if it has been set up right. Also, there s hardly any noticeable delay when establishing a connection. It normally takes no more than a second.
