We start our history at a rather arbitrary point in time: the birth of UNIX in the late 1960s. Our rationale for doing so is quite straightforward: Linux is a UNIX-like OS, designed and written specifically with the aim of reproducing UNIX s core functionality. UNIX is an extremely successful OS, originally developed in 1969 at Bell Labs, New Jersey, by a group of AT&T employees. Its creators, who included Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie, and Brian Kernighan, are ranked today as some of the most prominent personalities in computer history and are even idolized by some UNIX gurus. UNIX was, and still is, a very modern, portable, multi-tasking OS.

This resource record finds the mail servers for your domain. In the first column, you ll find the name of the domain they are used for, and the fourth column reveals the primary mail server. The number 10 indicates the priority of this mail server. If more than one mail server is present in the domain, the mail server with the lowest priority number is used first. Following the priority number is the DNS name of the mail server. This resource record provides a list of name servers for this domain. Typically, you must have this resource record for all master and slave name servers of the domain. The first column reveals the name of the domain, and the fourth column provides the name of the server itself. Notice the dot at the end of the server name, which indicates this as an absolute name (a name that refers to the root of the DNS hierarchy directly). The A resource record is used to define the relation between a host name and an IP address. The first column mentions the name of the host as it occurs in this domain, and the fourth column provides the IP address of this host. The CNAME ( common name ) resource record is used to define an alias, which is just a nickname that is used for a host. A CNAME should always refer to the real name of the host. Aliases can be useful if one server hosts many DNS names. In that case, use an A resource record for myserver and create CNAMEs that refer to the A resource record for all services provided by your server. This way, if you have to change the IP address of your server, you ll change it only once.

It was called Xenix, and for a time was the UNIX version with the largest installed base, piggybacking on the x86 processor success.
